iPhone, iPod, iPad audio checklist
- iPhone audio doesn't work correctly
- Check that the mute switch hasn't been flipped over ( yes, this has happened a few times )
- Check that the volume is turned up ( yes, again... it's happened )
- Can't hear out of the earpiece?
- Bring up the phone dialing number pad, if you press the buttons and you can hear the beeps, that means the earpiece is working
- Does the volume control say anything about "headphones"? If so, you likely have junk in your headphone socket. Use an earbud/Qtip to clean it out - do NOT squirt any liquid in to it, EVER ( unless you like odd patterns on your screen )
- If the earpiece works, but you cannot hear people talking to you, then chances are you have a faulty audio-multiplexer chip, it's a well known fault with the 4S, you'll need to get Apple to replace the phone
- If the earpiece barely works, is very muted, or slightly crackly, it's possible that some liquid went past the gauze and formed a film of junk on the earpiece. Sometimes it will clear away in a few days. Do NOT blast compressed air in to the earpiece, you'll only damage it
- Microphone doesn't seem to work right?
- Bring up the voice recover/memo app and try just talk, or lightly whistle, it should register on the VU meter. If it does you know at least the microphone works
- If people complain that you sound like you're in an empty room, echo chamber, then someone forgot to replace the rubber grommet in the iPhone around the mic when it was built or last serviced
- If people complain that you sound very faint, then you possibly have an obstruction blocking the microphone port, or it has shifted in the rubber grommet
- If people cannot hear you at all ( not even faintly ), but the VU meter trick works, then you likely have a faulty audio-multiplexer chip, iPhone will need to be replaced
- Music playback is weak or crackly - probably some junk got in to the speaker assembly, will need replacing
